Curriculum Resources | Choices Program

Curriculum Resources | Choices Program

Overview

The U.S. Role in a Changing World helps students reflect on global changes, assess national priorities, and decide for themselves the role the United States should play in the world today.

For many, the attacks of September 11th, 2001 brought home the importance of international issues. The war in Iraq has added to the immediacy of international issues. While questions about terrorism and security are high on the list of concerns, other issues also clamor for attention. A changing global economy, the threat of climate change, and the spread of HIV/AIDS are on policymakers' radar screens.

Readings

Readings review the forces that shape the U.S. role in the world today. Part I reviews three critical turning points in the history of U.S. foreign policy. Part II examines several pressing issues facing the United States and the world today: the economy, human health and the environment, international relations, and culture and values. Part III explores security concerns in the United States and considers how the issues presented in Part II influence policy decisions about security.

KC3 Kids Creating Community Content

KC3 Kids Creating Community Content

PROJECT OVERVIEW

No matter where you live in the world your community is unique. What can others learn from your area, your citizens, your natural or agricultural resources or your local and national treasures? What can you share with others that will enhance their view of your culture, your country or your heritage and our world? This standards based project seeks to tap into the creative nature of students as you look at your community with new eyes and explore ways to share your findings with others using videoconferencing and technology as a resource.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

  • Student Teams will research a topic in their community.
  • Students will develop a 30 – 45 minute informational program geared toward a specific audience educating them on the topic.
  • Each team will present their live videoconference to another school between December 6, 2010 - March 31, 2011.
  • Programs will be delivered using H.323 compatible videoconferencing equipment.
  • The project will be aligned to the national standards of your country.

  • Optional:
Teachers/Teams may sign up for FREE webinar conversations hosted by CILC. Each webinar will be devoted to a different aspect of program development and will feature a seasoned educator who has already participated in KC3 and will share their knowledge and tips. Each session will be followed by Q and A.

TEDxOilSpill Expedition

This is a week-long project to document the current situation in the Gulf of Mexico and bring a first hand report back to the TEDxOilSpill event in Washington DC on June 28th. We'll be working on land, air, and maybe even on boat. Our team is composed of several talented photographers and videographers. In addition to documentation of oil on the water and on the beach, we're particularly interested in the human side of the equation and will be talking to some of the people most affected by the catastrophe in the Gulf. We'll also be documenting any and all evidence of media interference by BP, the Coast Guard, or other officials.
